DESIGNER FAQ: BAR & COUNTER STOOLS
What is the difference between a counter stool and a barstool? What is a counter-height barstool?
Counter height stools have seats that are about 24” to 26” from the floor—pair them with a table or counter 36” to 39” high. Barstool chairs are generally 28” to 30” from floor to seat—pair them with a table or counter 40” to 42” high. You can find the exact seat heights of many of our counter stools and barstools on their individual product pages.
Are Ethan Allen barstools and counter stools good quality?
Our barstool chairs and counter stools are expertly designed for outstanding comfort and tested for durability and performance. Our upholstered options are hand-tailored in North America by our talented artisans. All are made to stand up to time and seat generations of great gatherings.
How many barstools should I have?
You’ll want to give ample elbow room, so it’s recommended that you allow 28” to 30” of space per bar stool chair. To figure out how many you’ll need, measure your counter, and divide by 30.
Should my kitchen chairs and stools match?
They can, but they don’t have to. A good example of matching styles is our Cyra dining chair and our Cyra barstool. If you don’t want to match them, they should at least complement. To do so, think of the style of your home—Classic, Country & Coastal, or Modern—and play up those features, colors, and details that not only show your personality, but bring your look together. Need suggestions? Our designers are always at the ready, and their services are free! You can also re-create your dining space in our 3D Room Planner and see exactly which combinations work best for you and your room.
Should my barstools match my kitchen cabinets?
As our curated selection of wood finishes is one-of-a-kind, it would be nearly impossible to match our finishes with another manufacturer’s. Instead, we suggest you complement your kitchen cabinets by choosing features—like the hardware, material, or color—that will still tie your look together beautifully. Is leather a good material for a barstool?
Yes! We offer many leather barstools and leather counter stools because our variety of hand-selected full-grain and top-grain leathers are not only comfortable and stylish, but many can also resist spills and stains. Just as they do with our sofas and living room chairs, our artisans cut each hide and color-blend it by hand utilizing specialized upholstery techniques that differ from what you may see on fabric upholstery.
Is white fabric easy to clean? Is white a good choice for barstools?
Absolutely! With our variety of easy-to-clean, stain repellant performance fabrics, you can feel confident choosing white for your barstools and not stress about those everyday messes. Find out how easy it is to treat spills and stains by visiting our Use & Care Guide.
